Yes, thanks to Ray at RBF Software, the joint copyright owner and
publisher of OctaMED, we cornered that elusive bloke Teijo Kinnunen
himself and quizzed him about life, the universe and of course his
preference in beverages.
With Questionnaire at the ready we let Teijo fill in his thoughts
and ideas about his very existance, oh, and Ray Burt-Frost
manages to sneak a few words in too...
1.
When is your birthday?
A. 2.10.1974 which makes me 19 years old this year.
Ray> this was published two years ago ;)
2.
Did you study computers at school/university?
A. Yes, computing was a subject at school (about 2 hours/week). But
it was mostly useless for me, as it was oriented for novice users.
Since then, I've had some computing courses at the university.
3.
Have you any brothers or sisters?
A. No.
4.
Are you married/any children?
A. No/no.
5.
When did you first start writing programs?
A. It was probably in 1982-1983, my father had bought a VIC-20, and
naturally I couldn't keep my hands out of it. They were rather small
& simple projects written in Basic. In 1985 I got a C-64, mostly for
games. Then, in 1987 I finally got an Amiga 2000, and a couple of
months later bought a C-compiler. My programs were mostly useless and
small... until (Octa)MED, which is still my only bigger project so
far.
6.
What was your first program?
A. Can't remember :-), perhaps:
10 PRINT "HELLO ";:GOTO 10 ??
One of my first Amiga "projects" was a coordinate display program,
first in Basic, then in C. It was a simple coordinate display, into
which you could draw lines and circles. Not really a useful tool, I
did it only for my own amusement/exercise. Later I started numerous
interesting programs, all are unfinished... and will remain so, I
guess.
7.
Where did the idea for MED come from?
A. From an early Soundtracker, D.O.C. Soundtracker V6. I immediately
noticed the powerful and easy editing system. But the thing was damn
badly programmed, I *had* to do something... and so I did... By that
time, I also hadn't programmed a single beep out of my Amiga, I
wanted to try some audio programming.
8.
Where did the idea for OctaMED come from?
A. From Ray Burt-Frost mainly, he contacted me when he was running
Amiganuts United and suggested that an eight channel version could
be made a commercial product.
9.
Will we ever see a PC version of OctaMED?
A. A PC version?
Rays Answer: Yes, Teijo has started work on it! (96)
10.
"I am 8O years old, does this make me the oldest OctaMED
fanatic?
A. Well, at least the oldest I've heard of...
Rays Answer:
As far as we know you are unique and now officially hold
the Title of "Sir OctaMED User" , any bidders for this crown?
11.
What Amigas do you have and if not, do you intend
getting the A4000?
A. I have a 5-year old A3000/25/105. Those Amigas currently in
market are vastly overpriced and underpowered. I'm not interested
in them.
12.
What programming language is your favourite?
A. Definitely C. Though some parts of OctaMED are written in
assembly for maximum speed, I avoid using assembler as much as
possible. Currently I'm getting used to C++, which hopefully improves
my programming style.
13.
What is your favourite Amiga program?
A. Of the programs I currently use on the Amiga, my favourites are:
Text editor: CygnusEd Pro
Programming tool: SAS/C Development System
Telecommunications: AmiTCP/PPP
Music program: NO COMMENT ;-) - well, perhaps PlaySID?
Game: NetHack V3.1 (I play games seldom, NetHack
is the only exception...)
14.
What hobbies have you got, other than computing?
A. Not much. Though not a real hobby, perhaps music
(techno/disco/rock, in that order). I'm quite a lazy person at heart,
so I often just lie around :-)
15.
What is your full time job, if you have one, if you
haven't what sort of full time work are you intending to do?
A. I'm studying Electrical Engineering right now, and I don't really
have a job yet. I suppose I will be somehow involved in the
telecommunications industry in the future, though.
16.
What has it been like serving in the forces, do you feel
that it gave you any help for your future?
A. I doubt that. I'm not a pacifist, but I have found that the army
is quite a stupid place. An enormous amount of attention is paid to
totally insignificant details, such as the order of your cupboard or
wrinkles on your bed. But being an office worker (luckily), I've at
least learnt to use Excel and WordPerfect...
17.
Have you ever visited England or any other countries?
A. I haven't visited England, though I'd love to do it sometime,
I've visited several countries, including Sweden, Germany and ex-
Soviet Union. I enjoy a lot travelling abroad, I just wish it wasn't
so expensive.
18.
Have you and Ray Burt-Frost ever met and if not why?
Rays Answer:
Unfortunately I am disabled and although I can walk,
without too much pain, travelling is not much fun for me, so Teijo
and I have never actually met, but I like to think that over the
years we have got to know and understand each other very well and to
be honest I have never felt the need to actually meet someone in
person. Teijo is a human being, like me and you with wants, likes
dislikes and hopes. Surely this is all that matters on this planet
and if we could ALL see life as the truly precious thing that it is
and the few strangely affected people that take delight in killing
and or interfering with anothers God given right to exist could
understand this, then wouldn't this planet be a magnificent place to
live on? Just think, for a start it would not matter if you are born
black, white, yellow or pink with polka dots!!!
To those that are now wondering....NO I am not a religious nut, just
another Human being that cares about ALL life, it doesn't last long
as it is, so why impose your will on another?
( I think Ray is off his soap box now - Richard. )
A. After Ray's profound answer, mine looks very modest, but anyway:
We haven't had any specific need for meeting each other. I haven't
had any problems co-operating with Ray via mail. Travelling costs
would also turn out to be quite high.
19.
What is your favourite television program?
A. I don't watch TV a lot. Mostly news. My favourite (international)
series is the Simpsons.
20.
What is your favourite food?
A. Nearly everything that's unhealthy :-) i.e. the stuff that's sold
at hamburger restaurants. Also the usual Italian things (pizzas
etc.). And nothing wins a good fillet of beef!
21.
What is your favourite drink, coffee, tea or something stronger?
A. Of the mild drinks: Coke/Sprite, of the stronger ones: beer,
or perhaps vodka X-)

Well, that wraps it up. If you have any other questions you'd like
answered, please send them in. We can't promise to get an answer
but we'll try our best.....
